PS 19 Queens

PS 19 Marino Jeantet experienced numerous years of water damage before undergoing comprehensive renovations to better insulate the 1922 building and 1932 addition. This building used by over 2,000 students and faculty saw increasing damage resulting in cracking brickwork and a collapsing roof. For this project, we implemented several renovations aimed to reduce the ongoing continuous repairs and provide a lasting design solution for the elementary school.

To address the escalating cycle of façade failures, we first removed the entire outer layer of brickwork. We then installed new masonry, added a narrow cavity drainage plane, and spray-applied a vapor-permeable membrane to improve the building’s insulation and protect it for the foreseeable future. All windows in the building were replaced as well as the roof and parapets. Rebuilding the parapets was essential to the success of the project as they are instrumental in contributing to a watertight structure. Lastly, we recreated the building’s decorative elements with cast stone replicas to mimic the original design.

These renovations helped to preserve the historical integrity of the school and ensured that PS 19 could continue to serve future generations of students in this Queens neighborhood.

This project was substantially complete on November 24, 2014.
