The Gowanus Embankment and Basin: A Proposal

Once a freshwater stream and tidal estuary, now recognized as one of the most polluted bodies of water in the United States, the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn has most recently become the focus of the City’s developers, politicians, artists, and community activists.

As part of an idea competition titled “Connections: The Gowanus Lowline,” our proposal envisions a mixed-use neighborhood called the “Gowanus Embankment,” redeveloping the Gowanus Basin as an economic hub. Our team proposed significant regrading to protect residential zones from future flooding and prioritization of hazardous waste removal.
