Built in 1967, PS 36 Manhattan was designed by Fredric Frost Jr. and is approximately 85,000sf. It is composed primarily of reinforced, poured-inplace concrete construction, with the exception of the stair towers, bulkheads, and infill panels between columns on the main volumes, which are brick masonry veneer over reinforced concrete or cinder concrete block. The building uniquely incorporates exposed Manhattan schist as foundation and site walls, with portions of the construction that bear into it and cantilever over it. Nelligan White replaced the concrete plaza and roof slab soffits to repair damages and prevent future water penetration.
